Northern Hokkaido Area

Northern Hokkaido is filled with diversified and primeval nature, including Cape Soya in the northernmost part of Japan, which offers a view of Sakhalin on clear days; the vast Sarobetsu Plain, stretching 30 km from north to south; magnificent Lake Shumarinai; Rishiri, Rebun Teuri and Yagishiri Islands, which are inhabited by rare plants and serve as resting places for sea birds; Sounkyo and Tenninkyo Hot Spring Resorts in the bosom of Taisetsuzan National Park, Japan's largest national park.

Central Hokkaido Area

Central Hokkaido is filled with a wide variety of attractions, such as Sapporo, a beautiful city with remains from the early Hokkaido development days; the canal city Otaru, which once thrived as a city of finance; Shakotan with its beautiful shorelines; hot spring resorts in Toya and Noboribetsu; Niseko and Iwanai, popular as resort areas available throughout the year; and Hidaka, where thoroughbred horses merrily gallop about.

Eastern Hokkaido Area

Surrounded by natural grandeur and dotted with mountains, lakes, grassy fields, marshes and secluded hot spring spots, Eastern Hokkaido features large-scale landscapes unique to the prefecture. They include Shiretoko, the hidden scenic spot full of wild animals, which is ready to be inscribed as a World Natural Heritage; Lake Akan nurturing marimo (algae ball), a natural monument; Kawayu and Teshikaga Hot Spring Resorts surrounded by important tourist spots; and the land of Tokachi where you can see the horizon.

Southern Hokkaido Area

Hakodate, which has the port that arose as Japan's first international one, with historical remains and aspects of overseas cultures, is the central city in Southern Hokkaido and provides many places of interest, including a famous night-view spot and a foreign cemetery. With Yunokawa Hot Spring Resorts with a view of a fire lit on a boat to attract fish serving as the main accommodation places, and Matsumae, a northern castle town that reached its height of glory, Southern Hokkaido is an exotic area where things old and new are blended together well.
