| Rishiri Island |
 |
| Along the shoreline of Rishiri, where the blue sky and sea, and Mt. Rishiri topped with white clouds are really beautiful, black-tipped groundsels, rishiri-hinageshi (a kind of poppy) and other alpine plants show their pretty flowers during the short summer in spite of severe natural conditions. |

With a diversified natural environment - including coastal sand dunes, grass fields, wetlands and forests - stretching around the lake, Japanese roses, ezosukashi-yuri (a kind of lily), baptisias and many other plants inhabit the area. This area is also well known as a treasure trove of wild birds. |

| Japanese roses |
 |
| The Japanese rose is the official flower of Hokkaido. This deciduous tree naturally grows on the coastal sand and bears pink glamorous flowers. They are also grown as ornamental plants, which bear red fruit in autumn. The trees, whose branches are densely covered in thorns, grow 1 to 1.5 m high. During the blooming season, they make the hilly area a fantastic scene of vivid pink. |
