| Hakodate Goryokaku Park |
 |
| This is Japan's first Western-style castle, designed by the Dutch scholar Ayasaburo Takeda, taking ideas from European castles. The name "Goryokaku" comes from the shape of the castle - five edges (goryo) protruding and forming a star-like shape. The park is studded with rows of cherry trees and crowded with many citizens in early May, the season for the flowers. |
